There is a Bridge that spans a river filled with crocodiles. The bridge is out and Gerry Adams/Ian Paisley has to make it to the other side. He puts on a t-shirt with a picture of the pope/he queen and whims across the river. When asked why the crocodiles didn’t eat him, he points to this t-shirt and answers “The crocodiles would never swallow that!”

There is a Bridge… uses a joke in which the key figures become interchangeable to examine the validity of anecdotal history. Through appropriated photographs, drawing and sound the project aims to look closely at the ways by which anecdotal, lived histories may mirror the language and architecture of potentially dangerous power structures; structures which are then often used to determine the trajectory for social progression.

Using the bridge which appears in the joke as an allegory for the relationships between Catholic and Protestant communities within N.I., the project takes a dry, satirical view of N.I. and England’s recent political climates and relationships.
